Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu Set For Norway Chess 2026 After Stellar Rise In Elite Chess

Indian star Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu has been confirmed for the 2026 edition of Norway Chess, scheduled to be held in Oslo from May 25 to June 5, 2026. The prestigious tournament will take place at Deichman Bjørvika and feature several of the world’s top players.

One of the leading talents of the new generation, Praggnanandhaa earned his place in the 2026 Candidates Tournament after winning the 2025 FIDE Circuit, further strengthening his position among the very best in world chess.

“Looking forward to being back in Norway Chess, I enjoyed playing in 2024. Most exciting format I have played,” says Praggnanandhaa.

Praggnanandhaa first made a strong impression at Norway Chess in 2022, when he won the Open title and announced himself as a rising force at the elite level. His return in 2024 proved equally significant, as he recorded his first classical victory over world champion Magnus Carlsen at the event, a breakthrough that highlighted his growing maturity and competitive edge.

“Praggnanandhaa delivered some memorable moments at Norway Chess in 2024, and it’s great to welcome him back,” said Benedicte Westre Skog, COO of Norway Chess.

From Child Prodigy to Global Contender

Praggnanandhaa’s journey in elite chess has been defined by historic milestones. He became a grandmaster at the age of 12 years and 10 months, having earlier set a record as the youngest International Master in history. He later became the youngest player to reach a FIDE World Cup final, qualifying for the 2024 Candidates Tournament.

From qualifying for the Candidates to achieving major results on the world stage, his consistency and ambition make him an exciting player for both fans and competitors. We’re looking forward to seeing what he brings to the tournament in 2026.

In 2024, he was also part of India’s gold medal–winning team at the Chess Olympiad. His steady excellence has taken him to a career-high world ranking of number four and a peak rating of 2785, setting the stage for another compelling appearance at Norway Chess 2026.
