Bangladesh endured a disastrous opening innings in the second Test against Australia, being dismissed for only 64 runs at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in South Mackay on Saturday.
Australia skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl, and Mitchell Starc quickly rewarded his captain’s decision.
The left-arm seamer generated considerable pace, bounce and movement to trouble the Bangladesh batters from the outset.
Bangladesh lost five wickets for just 15 runs as Starc ripped through their top order.
The Australian quick accounted for all five early dismissals, leaving the visitors under immense pressure.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam each scored 11 runs, while Hasan Mahmud added 10.
Shoriful Islam offered some resistance and finished as Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer with 14.
Four batters failed to open their accounts, while seven Bangladesh players finished without reaching double figures. Australia wrapped up the innings in only 34 overs.
Starc delivered remarkable figures of six wickets for 12 runs from his 10 overs. Cummins backed him up with three wickets for 25 runs, while Josh Hazlewood completed the attack with one wicket.
Australia encountered early trouble when they began their response. The hosts reached 41 for three after eight overs at the time of reporting.
Travis Head was dismissed for 22, while Matthew Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne contributed eight and four respectively before departing.
Steve Smith was unbeaten on one, while Cameron Green was yet to score.
Shoriful Islam claimed two wickets for Bangladesh, with Taskin Ahmed adding another as Australia’s reply also began under pressure.
