Mahendra Singh Dhoni is approaching a return to action in IPL 2026, with Michael Hussey confirming that his rehabilitation from a calf injury is moving in the right direction.
The experienced wicketkeeper-batter, now 42, has missed the last few weeks after picking up the injury before the tournament began.
Hussey conveyed confidence that Dhoni’s recovery is advancing without setbacks. He pointed out that Dhoni has concentrated heavily on improving his movement between the wickets, which had been a key area of concern.
While his batting technique and wicketkeeping skills remain unaffected, the main objective has been to rebuild endurance for match situations.
The support staff believe that once Dhoni feels assured about his physical condition, he will be prepared to return to competitive cricket.
Michael Hussey clarified that MS Dhoni will ultimately take the decision on his comeback.
The team continues to follow his progress, but they are allowing him the freedom to decide when he is ready.
Michael Hussey also remarked that excitement is building among supporters, with the entire city keenly waiting for Dhoni’s return.
Although Dhoni has been actively training, he has chosen not to be present in the dugout during matches.
Michael Hussey said the move deliberately avoided diverting attention away from the team.
Given Dhoni’s stature, his presence would naturally attract significant focus from fans and media. He preferred to ensure that the squad remained undisturbed during games.
Even in his absence on match days, Dhoni has maintained a strong influence within the team environment.
Hussey acknowledged that he continues to guide players during training sessions and contributes valuable experience. His presence around the squad has helped maintain confidence and stability among the players.
With the Chennai Super Kings preparing to take on the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, expectations are growing that Dhoni could return soon. His availability would offer a major boost as the competition moves forward.
