The Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi came alive on Sunday as 23 nations gathered for the pre-tournament press conference of the first-ever Kho Kho World Cup 2025, set to take place from January 13 to 19. The event showcased cultural diversity and marked a historic moment for the indigenous Indian sport on the global stage.
The press conference turned into a vibrant celebration of cultural exchange. Traditional Indian music welcomed the players, while each nation brought its unique flair. African teams uplifted spirits with their war cries, and European nations added energy with their dance moves.
Konrad, a 24-year-old player from Poland, expressed his excitement: “Kho Kho is a beautiful yet taxing sport. It balances physical activity and strategic thinking perfectly.” Bridgette from Australia echoed his sentiments, adding, “It feels like a childhood game with the thrill of strategic competition.”
Karolina from Poland’s women’s team shared her journey: “We’re newcomers to Kho Kho, but our training has enhanced our strategies. Watching teams like India has been inspiring.” South African women’s coach Matshidiso promised tough competition: “We are here to give India a strong fight.”The pre-tournament photo session with the World Cup trophy added to the excitement. Sudhanshu Mittal, president of the Kho Kho Federation of India, said, “This gathering of 23 nations fills me with pride. It highlights Kho Kho’s universal appeal and potential for international growth.”
MS Tyagi, general secretary of the federation, commended the enthusiasm of participants during the technical briefing, ensuring clarity of rules and high standards for the tournament.
The championship, running until January 19, marks a milestone in Kho Kho’s journey toward global recognition and promises thrilling matches for fans worldwide.
