Former India pacer Madan Lal hopes that the ICC has prepared a “good wicket” for clash between India and Pakistan. Where both team would be in the T20 World Cup at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York today.
The New York pitch, known for its unpredictable bounce and extra swing, has been a focal point of the tournament. Recent matches at the venue have been low-scoring, prompting the ICC to assure the best possible surfaces for the remaining games.
“It’s a big challenge, and I hope the ICC has prepared a good wicket because this is a crucial match. If the pitch remains like the previous ones, it’ll be tough for both teams, but they’ll have to adapt,” said the 1983 World Cup winner to IANS.
Asked if India has an advantage after playing in New York against Bangladesh (warm-up) and Ireland (tournament opener), Lal responded, “Not necessarily, as a bad wicket affects both sides equally. However, prior experience might help understand the bounce and variation. But it’s a new game, new surface, and a different, stronger bowling attack.”
India and Pakistan have faced off seven times in the T20 World Cup, with India winning six times and Pakistan once. The upcoming match adds another chapter to their storied rivalry. The 73-year-old legend discussed how players prepare for such high-stakes encounters.
“I have played against Pakistan often and always gave 200%. You want to avoid blame, so we ensured everything was intact. Concentration, correct process, proper bowling, and good batting were key,” said Lal.
On the cricket rivalry between the two nations, he added, “India-Pakistan is a high-pressure game. Players strive to perform well because the whole world is watching, especially India. However, we definitely have a stronger team.”
