Ishan Kishan delivered one of the standout performances of the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
The East Zone skipper crossed the 200-run mark to become just the third player from the region to register a double century in the competition. His achievement made him the first East Zone batter to complete a double hundred in a Duleep Trophy final.
Kishan needed only 270 balls to reach his double century and decorated his innings with 26 fours and two sixes. He brought up the milestone during the second day when he struck Devdutt Padikkal through the covers for a boundary.
The wicketkeeper-batter resumed his innings on 111 not out and continued to dominate the South Zone bowling attack.
Kishan followed Arun Lal and Saba Karim into East Zone’s exclusive double-century club.
Lal had previously registered two huge scores of 287 and 214 in the Duleep Trophy.
Karim achieved the feat in 1995 by remaining unbeaten on 200.
Kishan has now added his name to the distinguished list with a commanding performance in the tournament final.
The East captain shared a valuable 230-run partnership with Kumar Kushagra for the fifth wicket.
Kishan eventually pushed his score to 250 before fatigue forced him to retire hurt. By that stage, East Zone had reached an imposing 611/5. His commanding innings gave East Zone a huge advantage while keeping the South Zone bowlers under sustained pressure.
The Chennai performance provided Kishan with an opportunity to demonstrate his credentials for the Test wicketkeeper’s position. His ability to combine a long stay at the crease with aggressive strokeplay made the innings particularly significant.
South Zone’s bowlers spent almost one-and-a-half days on the field as Kishan and his teammates continued to pile on the runs.
