Iran’s football federation is in discussions with FIFA to move its 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico due to concerns over the team’s safety.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, confirmed that security guarantees remain insufficient. He stated through the Iranian embassy in Mexico’s X account that the team will avoid travelling to the United States until officials can guarantee their safety.
“When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America/We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s matches in the World Cup in Mexico,” the post read.
This move follows escalating regional tensions after US-Israel airstrikes on Iran in early 2026, which have raised fears for the team’s well-being. Iran’s sports minister previously warned that these developments could jeopardise the national team’s participation in the tournament.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that Iran may take part in the World Cup, but highlighted that playing in the United States may pose risks to the team’s safety. He suggested that they could consider alternative arrangements for their own protection.
Iran qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada on 25 March 2025, becoming the first Asian team to secure a spot. Iran is set to play two of its 2026 World Cup group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, as currently scheduled by FIFA.
The heightened geopolitical situation has created the possibility of Iran withdrawing or moving its matches, an unprecedented scenario in recent World Cup history.
FIFA may need to explore last-minute alternatives if Iran changes its plans.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) stated it has not received official notice of withdrawal.
While Iran maintains its intention to participate, rapidly changing conditions continue to cast uncertainty over the team’s final arrangements.
