Mumbai Indians sealed a well-earned place in the IPL 2025 playoffs following a commanding 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals in Match 63, held at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.
Suryakumar Yadav propelled the hosts with a superb unbeaten 73, while Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah bowled out Delhi Capitals for 121, sharing six wickets between them.
Mumbai Indians appeared under pressure at 132 for 5 in the 18th over and looked unlikely to reach 150.
However, Suryakumar Yadav’s fluent 43-ball 73 and Naman Dhir’s explosive 24 not out off just eight balls combined to add 48 runs in the final two overs, pushing MI to a competitive total of 180 for 5.
This late surge proved pivotal as Mumbai’s bowlers capitalised on the conditions superbly.
Santner took 3 for 11 and Bumrah claimed 3 for 12, ensuring Delhi Capitals were dismissed in 18.2 overs.
Despite drizzle threatening the evening, Mumbai’s bowling performance left the visitors reeling and unable to chase the target.
The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Mumbai Indians, who endured a difficult 2024 campaign and began this IPL season with just one win in five matches.
The team’s current six-match unbeaten run has seen them regain form and secure a deserved spot in the playoffs.
Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, missed the impact of their captain Axar Patel, who would have been ideal on this wicket but was unavailable.
After a strong start, Delhi’s batting faltered, a recurring theme in their IPL 2025 campaign.
The visitors stumbled early, losing three wickets for 49 runs in the Powerplay. Deepak Chahar struck in the second over, removing stand-in captain Faf du Plessis, caught by Santner.
KL Rahul, playing as an Impact Substitute, contributed 11 runs before being caught behind off Boult’s bowling.
Santner and Bumrah’s tight and varied bowling kept Delhi under constant pressure.
Despite small contributions from Vipraj Nigam, who scored a brisk 20 off 11 balls, and Sameer Rizvi, who top-scored with 39, the innings lacked momentum.
Mumbai’s innings began on a disappointing note with Rohit Sharma falling after five balls.
Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the ship by putting on a 55-run partnership before Varma was dismissed.
They played cautiously in the middle overs, as MI reached 64 for 2 at a slow pace.
Suryakumar Yadav’s aggression towards the death, including a big six over extra cover, helped Mumbai accelerate and post a challenging total.
Naman Dhir’s cameo late in the innings further bolstered the score.
Mumbai Indians 180/5 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 73, Tilak Varma 27, Naman Dhir 24; Mukesh Kumar 2-48, Kuldeep Yadav 1-22)
beat
Delhi Capitals 121 all out in 18.2 overs (Sameer Rizvi 39; Mitchell Santner 3-11, Jasprit Bumrah 3-12) by 59 runs.
