IPL 2026 featured a crucial fixture as Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and decided to bowl first against Mumbai Indians in the 65th match at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
The encounter carried significant importance, with KKR needing a win to remain in the race for the playoffs.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane acknowledged the pressure of the situation but stressed the need to stay focused.
“We need to win two out of two, but we must stay in the moment,” he said. He also added that the pitch looked uncertain at first glance.
MI skipper Hardik Pandya said he would also have preferred to bowl first. He pointed to the nature of the surface while explaining the decision.
“Looks like a track that’s been under the covers,” Pandya noted, while expressing his confidence in the team’s pedigree.
“MI has a long history of winning titles; we want to keep our heads high,” he added.
Mumbai Indians strengthened their side with the inclusion of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Pandya. The team also named Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar in the squad.
The team reshuffled its line-up, with Sherfane Rutherford, Raj Angad Bawa, and Shardul Thakur making way for the returning players.
Kolkata Knight Riders made one change to their line-up. They included Rovman Powell in place of Finn Allen to strengthen their middle-order hitting.
