The much-anticipated opening clash of IPL 2025 between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the iconic Eden Gardens is under threat due to rain.
Weather conditions in Kolkata pose a significant challenge, casting doubt on whether the blockbuster opener will proceed as scheduled.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the city, warning of heavy rainfall throughout the day.
The forecasts predict a 74% chance of rain during the day, increasing to 90% by the evening, with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusts of wind expected.
Despite the high likelihood of rain, the AccuWeather Rain Probability Index offers some hope, showing a gradual decrease in rainfall chances as the day progresses.
Rain has already disrupted preparations for the match.
On Friday evening, a heavy downpour around 6 PM prevented both KKR and RCB from completing their scheduled training sessions.
A light drizzle also affected Kolkata and Howrah on Saturday morning, further adding to concerns.
Even KKR’s practice match earlier this week was hampered by adverse weather conditions.
If the match proceeds, Eden Gardens promises to be an electrifying contest.
Traditionally known as a batting paradise, the venue has a history of high-scoring matches, with short boundaries offering plenty of opportunities for big hits.
The record chase of 262 runs by Punjab Kings at this very ground is a testament to its reputation.
The match could also see KKR’s spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, dominate the game if conditions aid turn. The dampness could support seamers early on, making the powerplay overs crucial.
