Earlier, Ishan Kishan, another opener, and Gill combined for a strong 143-run partnership until Kishan was dismissed for 77(64). Gill scored 85(92) at that point. He shared a key 69-run partnership with Sanju Samson in the middle overs before Samson left just after reaching his half-century. The innings was then captained by a ferocious 52-ball 70 by Hardik Pandya.
