India vs Wales Hockey World Cup: Team India defeated Wales 4-2 in their third match of the Hockey World Cup. This is India’s second win in the tournament while it is Wales’ third consecutive defeat. With the defeat, Wales is out of the tournament.
During the first quarter of the match, both teams failed to score at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Shamsher scored the first goal for India in the 22nd minute. The goal came in the form of a penalty corner. Player Akashdeep scored the second goal in the 32nd minute to increase India’s lead to 2-0, but after that Wales scored two consecutive goals to level the score at 2-2. The score remained tied at 2-2 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, first Akashdeep and then captain Harmanpreet scored a goal for the team to increase India’s lead to 4-2, which proved to be decisive in the end. Akashdeep scored 2 goals.
India had a chance to reach the quarter-finals directly in the match against Wales. However, this would be possible if Team India have won 8-0 against Wales. Now, to reach the quarter-finals, Team India has to play a cross-over match against New Zealand.
Ahead of winning the match, India finished second in Group D. India had 7 points from 2 wins and 1 draw in three matches. England also have the same number of points as this group, but on the basis of a better goal average, leaving India behind, entered the quarter-finals.
The Indian team will face New Zealand in the cross-over match on January 22 at the Kalinga Stadium. The winning team of that match will get a chance to play in the quarter-finals.
This is India’s second win in the Hockey World Cup. India had to play a draw with England after a 2-0 win over Spain in their first match. The victory of India ended the group-stage matches.
