India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: Dhruv Jurel Five Runs From Century As Rain Delays Play

Day two of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka will likely resume at 4:25 PM local time after a prolonged rain interruption at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground on Monday.

Dark skies and initial rainfall prompted umpires to call for an early tea with India strongly placed at 475/8 in 131.2 overs.

Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 95, just five runs short of his second Test century and first in Sri Lankan conditions.

Ground staff quickly brought out the covers as the rain intensified after players left the field.

Although the downpour temporarily eased and ground staff cleared the pooled water, another spell of rain delayed the restart.

Following an inspection as the weather improved, match officials ordered the covers off and scheduled play to resume until 6 PM.

India had dominated the second session before the interruption despite losing two wickets on a deteriorating surface offering increasing assistance to spin.

Jurel remained composed throughout his innings, reaching 95 not out from 155 balls, with nine boundaries, to keep India firmly in control.

Disciplinary action was confirmed against India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando following their heated exchange on day one.

The match referee fined both players 25 per cent of their respective match fees and awarded one demerit point each after finding them guilty of inappropriate physical contact.

Brief Scores

India 475/8 in 131.2 overs (Devdutt Padikkal 117, Dhruv Jurel 95 not out; Asitha Fernando 4-78, Keshara Nuwantha 2-154) vs Sri Lanka.
