India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in a much-anticipated ICC Champions Trophy match at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, February 23. The thrilling encounter promises to be a pivotal moment for both teams in the tournament.
India’s Strong Start And Pakistan’s Setback
Rohit Sharma’s India began their Champions Trophy campaign with a dominant six-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Wednesday. In contrast, hosts Pakistan suffered a disappointing 60-run loss to New Zealand in their tournament opener earlier this week, putting extra pressure on them for this must-win encounter.
Must-Win Match For Pakistan; India Eyes Semis Spot
For defending champions Pakistan, this match is crucial to stay in contention for a semi-final spot from Group A. On the other hand, a win for India would almost guarantee their place in the last four of the eight-team tournament, putting them in a strong position moving forward.
The two teams last met in the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad, where India cruised to a seven-wicket win. Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer contributed half-centuries, maintaining India’s unbeaten record in the tournament.

Indian pace attack spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, who made his return to international cricket before the World Cup after a lengthy injury layoff, was instrumental in that victory. Along with Mohammed Siraj and Hardik Pandya, Bumrah helped bowl Pakistan out for just 191 runs, while the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja shared four wickets between them.
However, India faced heartbreak in their last Champions Trophy meeting with Pakistan, losing the 2017 final at The Oval, missing out on their second title in the tournament.
India holds a psychological edge, having remained unbeaten in the last six ODI meetings against Pakistan, including a washed-out match during the 2023 Asia Cup. Additionally, the two teams last met in the 2024 T20 World Cup group stage in New York, where India dominated, winning by nine runs. Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his stunning 3-14 performance. India went on to lift the T20 World Cup, claiming their second title in the format.
