Saurav Ganguly on India vs Pakistan
This week’s announcement of the 2023 World Cup schedule included India’s opening match against Australia on October 8. At the home World Cup, which India will be hosting for the first time, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad will be looking to snap a more than ten-year ICC trophy drought. The team had last won an ICC championship in 2013 when Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Indian team won the Champions Trophy. Dhoni also guided India to their last World Cup victory (in 2011).
The team India will play Pakistan in the highly anticipated match on October 15 at Ahmedabad’s illustrious Narendra Modi Stadium. Arguably, the match between the bitter rivals is one of the most anticipated in the competition, but former India captain Sourav Ganguly thinks the rivalry between the two teams hasn’t produced much quality in recent years.
Ganguly believes that Indians has been winning “one-sided” matches against Pakistan over the past few years.
“There is a lot of hype in this match, but the quality has not been that good for a long time because India kept on winning one-sidedly. Pakistan probably defeated India for the first time in the T20 World Cup in Dubai,” Ganguly told Star Sports, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
The match had gone down to the final ball in the previous meeting between the two teams (in the T20 World Cup 2022), with team India’s securing a thrilling four-wicket victory in Melbourne. In the same event in 2021, Pakistan defeated India by 10 wickets; emphasizing this further, Ganguly thinks India’s match with Australia generates superior cricket.
The previous BCCI President stated, “team did not play well in that tournament (2021 T20 WC), but in my opinion, India vs. Australia tends to be a better game in the World Cup because the quality is better.”
