India produced a disciplined bowling performance to dismiss England for 258 in 47.5 overs in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday, with all-rounder Axar Patel returning career-best figures of 4-62.
Joe Root remained unbeaten on 76 as England recovered from a middle-order collapse to post a competitive total.
England made a solid start through Ben Duckett (43) and Jacob Bethell (14), who added 61 runs for the opening wicket while negotiating Jasprit Bumrah’s opening spell in his first ODI appearance after 968 days.
Gurnoor Brar changed the course of the innings after switching ends, dismissing both openers in the same over.
Bumrah then removed Harry Brook for 1, while Prasidh Krishna struck twice in an over to leave England reeling.
Captain Jos Buttler fell cheaply in his 200th ODI, and Sam Curran was also dismissed as England slumped to 80/5.
Will Jacks scored 20, but Shivam Dube claimed his second ODI wicket after KL Rahul completed a one-handed catch behind the stumps.
Joe Root and Liam Dawson revived the innings with a 121-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Dawson scored his maiden ODI fifty with 68 off 83 balls, while Root registered his fourth successive ODI score of 50 or more.
Axar Patel broke the stand by dismissing Dawson in the 44th over.
Root survived a dropped return catch by Shivam Dube and remained unbeaten on 76 off 76 balls, taking England beyond 250.
Jofra Archer added 12 off six balls before Adil Rashid and ODI debutant Josh Tongue fell in the 48th over.
