Defending champions India will meet England in the second semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday at Mumbai’s historic Wankhede Stadium.
The match will extend one of cricket’s most enduring rivalries. It will also be the third consecutive T20 World Cup in which India and England have encountered each other at the semi-final stage.
In the previous two tournaments, the team that won the India–England semi-final eventually lifted the trophy.
In the 2022 edition in Australia, India faced England in a T20 World Cup knockout match for the first time. England comfortably chased India’s total of 168 without losing a wicket, securing a ten-wicket victory before going on to win the championship.
The two teams met again in the semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was jointly hosted by the United States and the West Indies. On that occasion, India reversed the result.
Batting first, India posted 171 runs in 20 overs, led by Rohit Sharma’s 57. Contributions from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya also strengthened the innings.
England struggled while chasing the target and were dismissed for 103 in 16.4 overs. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav collected three wickets each, while Jasprit Bumrah claimed two.
India secured a convincing 68-run victory and later defeated South Africa in the final to claim their second T20 World Cup title.
The surface at Wankhede Stadium generally favours aggressive batting and frequently produces high-scoring T20 matches. Its consistent bounce and rapid outfield allow batters to play attacking shots with confidence.
Teams batting first often aim for totals between 190 and 220 runs. Spin bowlers usually receive limited assistance, whereas fast bowlers who use variations and maintain disciplined lines can still influence the contest.
Weather forecasts indicate favourable conditions for cricket in Mumbai during the semi-final. The sky is expected to remain clear throughout the day.
Temperatures may range between 27 and 37 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are predicted to exceed 60 per cent, which is typical for the coastal climate. No rainfall is expected, reducing the likelihood of interruptions.
