ICC Threatens Pakistan With Strict Sanctions Over Possible T20 World Cup Pullout

The International Cricket Council has reportedly issued a stern warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board. The warning comes in case Pakistan decides to withdraw from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Bangladesh was removed from the tournament and replaced by Scotland after the Bangladesh Cricket Board refused to play matches in India. The ICC’s decision followed the published match schedule.

Following Bangladesh’s ouster, Pakistan’s Minister for Sports, Naqvi, accused the ICC of applying ‘double standards’ in favour of India. He described the situation as ‘unjust’ for Bangladesh.

On Saturday, Naqvi told reporters, “Bangladesh has been treated unfairly. One country can make any decision whenever, while it is the opposite for another. Bangladesh is a major stakeholder, and this injustice should not happen.”

“Our stance (on World Cup participation) will be what the government of Pakistan instructs me. The Prime Minister is not in Pakistan right now. When he returns, I’ll be able to give you our final decision. It’s the government’s decision. We obey them, not the ICC,” Naqvi added.

Possible ICC Sanctions

“If Pakistan also decides not to play the T20 World Cup, the ICC will impose a series of sanctions, including no bilateral series with any international team, no NOC for foreign players in PSL, and no Asia Cup participation,” an ICC source mentioned.

An ICC source indicated that these measures would be enforced if Pakistan refuses to participate. The warning underscores the ICC’s strict stance on maintaining tournament commitments.

Pakistan is set to play all matches in Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the event. Their first match is against the Netherlands on 7 February. They are also scheduled to face India on 15 February in Colombo during the group stage.

The ICC’s warning highlights rising tensions in international cricket. Pakistan’s forthcoming decision will be closely monitored by fans and cricket authorities around the world.
