Gurjant Singh Announces International Retirement After Decade-Long Career With Indian Hockey Team

Indian men’s hockey forward Gurjant Singh has officially announced his retirement from international hockey, drawing the curtain on an accomplished career. He announced the Hockey India Awards ceremony held in New Delhi on Friday.

At the age of 31, Gurjant concludes nearly a decade of international service, during which he featured in 130 matches and netted 33 goals. His consistent performances made him a key contributor to India’s resurgence in world hockey.

Hailing from Khailara village in Amritsar, Punjab, Gurjant rose rapidly through the junior circuit, impressing with his pace and attacking instincts.

Gurjant first gained prominence during the 2016 Junior World Cup in Lucknow, where his goal in the final helped India secure the title. He transitioned to the senior side in 2017 and soon cemented his place in the team.

Gurjant played an instrumental role in India securing bronze medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He also contributed to the team’s gold medal victory at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and the triumph at the 2017 Asia Cup, along with multiple Asian Champions Trophy wins. His achievements were recognised with the Arjuna Award in 2021.

Retirement Statement

Sharing his decision, Gurjant stated, “It is with a mix of pride and deep emotion that I announce my retirement today. I started my hockey journey by looking up to the seniors sitting in this room, and to have fulfilled my dream of playing for India alongside them is something I will always treasure.”

He further said, “I feel incredibly satisfied to have been part of the historical revival of Indian hockey and to have achieved two Olympic medals… I leave the international stage a very happy and proud man.”

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey commended Gurjant’s contribution, noting that his energy, speed and ability to deliver in crucial moments made him a formidable player. He expressed gratitude for the forward’s service to the nation.

Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh also highlighted that Gurjant’s journey from rural Punjab to Olympic success would continue to motivate young athletes across India.

Gurjant Singh retires with an impressive record and a legacy defined by dedication and achievement. His contributions to Indian hockey will be remembered as part of a significant phase in the sport’s revival.
