England’s Fearless Captain And One Of Cricket’s Greatest All-Rounders, Ben Stokes, To Retire After New Zealand Series

One of the world’s finest all-rounders, a fearless captain and one of the sport’s greatest big-match performers, Ben Stokes will retire from international cricket after the ongoing Test series against New Zealand.

The 35-year-old informed his England teammates of his decision before the fourth day’s play at Trent Bridge.

Stokes urged his teammates to give everything in his final match, saying he wanted the team to leave the field knowing they had given their absolute best.

Stokes transformed England’s fortunes after taking over the Test captaincy, embracing an attacking style that revived interest in the longest format and produced a series of memorable victories. His leadership, alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, reshaped England’s approach with positive, fearless cricket.

Ben Stokes’ announcement followed a difficult week in which he missed the second Test before returning to lead England in the series finale.

Stokes produced some of the defining performances of his generation. His unbeaten 84 guided England to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 2019, while his unforgettable 135 not out at Headingley inspired one of the greatest Ashes victories in history.

Ben Stokes also played a vital role in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup triumph. He will conclude his international career with 122 Tests, including 44 as captain, alongside 114 One-Day Internationals and 43 T20 Internationals.

The England and Wales Cricket Board praised Stokes for his remarkable contribution to the game, highlighting his ability to deliver under pressure and inspire future generations.

The board credited him with producing unforgettable moments, leading England with courage, and leaving a lasting legacy as one of the country’s greatest cricketers.
