ENG vENG vs NZ: Curtain Rises On Cricket World Cup Today, Sans Opening Ceremony – Here's Why NZ
The Cricket World Cup 2023 is on the brink of commencing, with anticipation building as the defending champions, England, prepare to face off against the last edition’s runners-up, New Zealand, in the opening clash. The venue for this exciting showdown is the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and the match is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
In the lead-up to the tournament, there were speculations about the possibility of an opening ceremony. However, as of now, no concrete plans have been confirmed by either the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the International Cricket Council (ICC). It appears that an opening ceremony may not be part of the Cricket World Cup 2023.
A report shed light on this matter, quoting a source who stated, “There was never an opening ceremony planned for the World Cup. I can confirm that.” The source went on to explain, “In the case of the IPL, you can have a short opening ceremony, as the match starts in the evening. Here, the match starts in the afternoon,” offering clarity on the absence of a formal opening ceremony.
Despite the absence of an opening ceremony, the BCCI did organize the Captains’ Day on the eve of the England vs. New Zealand opener. During this event, all 10 captains were engaged in discussions and interviews, with former India head coach Ravi Shastri and ex-England captain Eoin Morgan posing questions.
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, was asked about the historical trend where the hosting nations had won the last three World Cups. He responded, “Not thinking too much about that stuff, but yeah, in the last three editions, hosting teams won the World Cups, and we will give our everything in this World Cup and enjoy the tournament.”
Rohit Sharma also expressed confidence in the tournament’s appeal, saying, “People are going to love this tournament. The stadiums will be jam-packed. Indians love their cricket. It is going to be a great tournament.”
The opening match of the Cricket World Cup is set to commence at 2:00 PM IST, with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM IST. Cricket enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the exciting battles and memorable moments that this tournament promises to deliver.
