Devajit Saikia Takes Over As BCCI Secretary; Prabhtej Bhatia Appointed Treasurer At SGM

In a significant shift within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devajit Saikia, the former Assam cricketer, was elected unopposed as the new BCCI secretary at the Special General Meeting (SGM) held on Sunday. Alongside him, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia was appointed as the new treasurer of the board.

Both Saikia and Bhatia emerged as the only candidates for their respective positions, as announced by Achal Kumar Jyoti, the BCCI electoral officer and former Chief Election Commissioner of India. Their unopposed election marks a new chapter for the governing body of Indian cricket.

Taranga Gogoi, president of the Assam Cricket Association, took to X to congratulate the newly elected officials: “Congratulated Shri @lonsaikia dangoriya on being elected as the Secretary and Shri @prabhtejb ji as the Treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with the Apex Council Members of Assam Cricket Association at BCCI’s Mumbai office, today. Wishing you both tremendous success and fulfillment in your new endeavors! May your leadership and expertise take Indian cricket to new heights!”

Devajit Saikia, who has previously served as BCCI’s joint secretary, has been acting as the secretary following Jay Shah’s appointment as the ICC Chairman on December 1. Saikia has also played four first-class matches for Assam, showcasing his cricketing experience. The joint secretary position, previously held by Saikia, is expected to be filled through another election process.

Meanwhile, Prabhtej Bhatia steps into the role of treasurer after the departure of Ashish Shelar, who was inducted as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra state government. Bhatia brings extensive experience to the position, having served as president of the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh (CSCS) and previously holding a position within the BCCI Apex Council.

With these key appointments, the BCCI is poised for a new phase of leadership, focusing on the continued growth and management of Indian cricket.
