Delhi Capitals secured the toss and chose to field first against Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2026 fixture at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. The side introduced pacer Auqib Nabi Dar for his debut after his impressive domestic performances.
Delhi entered the contest following a heartbreaking one-run loss to the Gujarat Titans, whereas Chennai approached the match after enduring three defeats in a row.
Captain Axar Patel confirmed that the team brought in Nabi and Ashutosh Sharma in place of Vipraj Nigam and Nitish Rana. Ashutosh will take the field later as the Impact Player during the batting phase, while Sameer Rizvi is set to occupy the number three position.
Explaining the decision, Patel noted that the surface appeared suitable for chasing and emphasised the importance of limiting the opposition to a modest total. He added that the squad remains focused on controllable aspects and carries a more balanced combination than last season.
Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad welcomed back Dewald Brevis, strengthening the batting order. The team also introduced left-arm pacer Gurjapneet Singh, replacing Matt Henry.
Ruturaj Gaikwad further stated that veteran wicketkeeper MS Dhoni is recovering from a calf injury. He said Dhoni will miss the match. Gaikwad added that he expects him to return soon.
Pitch experts Daren Ganga and Deep Dasgupta observed that the pitch offers a balanced contest. They noted that the long straight boundary adds difficulty. The shorter square boundaries provide scoring opportunities.
Pitch experts also pointed out that dry areas may assist spin bowlers. Consistent grass coverage could favour batters. This could make a high-scoring match likely.
Both teams head into the fixture determined to turn their fortunes around. Delhi will aim to exploit early bowling conditions. Chennai will focus on posting a competitive total and securing a much-needed victory.
