CSK Dealt Major Setback Before IPL ‘El Clasico’ Against MI, Coach Suggests Key Bowler Likely Unavailable

Ahead of the highly-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI), CSK head coach Stephen Fleming suggested that pacer Matheesha Pathirana might miss the game due to injury, although the extent of the injury is not severe. The match, often dubbed as the ‘El Clasico’ of the IPL, is set to take place at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Currently positioned third in the standings with three wins and two losses, totaling six points, CSK enters the game following a victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their last outing. Meanwhile, MI, placed seventh, has gained momentum with two wins after three initial losses, including a convincing victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their previous match.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Fleming addressed Pathirana’s injury status, stating, “It (Pathirana’s niggle) was not as bad as what we had thought, so we are very hopeful that if not tomorrow, then very close. We know the importance of him in games like this, but we will make sure he is 100 per cent in this form.”

Fleming also lauded CSK’s new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, comparing his temperament to that of former captain MS Dhoni. He dismissed concerns about Gaikwad’s strike rate, emphasizing his effectiveness and understanding of the game.

Despite the evolution of batting skills in the IPL, Fleming highlighted the need for measures to support bowlers in maintaining balance within the game. He suggested revisiting regulations, such as the two-bouncer rule, to address this issue.

Expressing anticipation for the fixture, which has evolved into a significant rivalry over the years, Fleming emphasized the competitive spirit between the two successful franchises. With both CSK and MI boasting five IPL titles each, the match promises to be a thrilling encounter.
