Coimbatore To Get First Dedicated Paralympic Sports Complex, Marking Major Push For Inclusive Athletics

Coimbatore is set to take a significant step towards inclusive sports development after the Tamil Nadu government granted Administrative Sanction for the city’s first dedicated Paralympic Sports Complex. The long-awaited project is expected to transform training opportunities for differently-abled athletes across the region.

The facility will be developed by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation at Kavundampalayam in West Zone Ward 33. Spread over approximately 1.10 acres, the project will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 9.90 crore, providing Coimbatore with its first purpose-built sports hub exclusively for para-athletes.=

Designed as a fully barrier-free complex, the facility aims to address the long-standing lack of professional-grade infrastructure for para-sports in the city. Civic officials said construction work is expected to commence shortly.

Once completed, the complex will feature multiple indoor sports facilities, including table tennis, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and badminton. Outdoor infrastructure will support para-athletics disciplines such as javelin throw, discus throw, shot put and club throw, allowing athletes to train and compete under standardised conditions.

Comprehensive Support Facilities Planned

In addition to sporting arenas, the complex will include a modern gymnasium tailored for para-athletes, along with a yoga and rehabilitation centre. First-aid and medical care units will be part of the project, alongside separate, fully accessible changing rooms and restrooms for men and women.

The design also includes spectator seating and a cafeteria, ensuring the venue functions as a complete sporting ecosystem. Officials said all amenities will adhere to international accessibility norms.

The initiative aligns with the Tamil Nadu government’s broader sports development strategy, which focuses on strengthening infrastructure while nurturing talent from grassroots, rural and underrepresented communities.

In recent years, Coimbatore has consolidated its position as a sports hub with major public investments, including a Rs 9.67-crore hockey stadium and upcoming indoor volleyball and international-standard kabaddi stadiums near the Nehru Indoor Stadium.

The proposed Paralympic Sports Complex adds a crucial inclusive dimension to this growing ecosystem, reinforcing Coimbatore’s commitment to both sporting excellence and equity.
