Asian Para Games: PM Modi Hails Nishad Kumar After Historic Long Jump Gold

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised para-athlete Nishad Kumar for his versatility and determination after he won gold in the men’s T47 long jump at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Nishad secured India’s second gold medal at the Games with a best jump of 7.11 metres at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. The victory marked his debut in the event at the Asian Para Games.

In a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on X, PM Modi congratulated Nishad and expressed pride in his achievement.

“Very proud of Nishad Kumar on winning Gold in the Men’s Long Jump T47 event at the Asian Para Games 2026 with an outstanding jump. Winning a Gold on his debut in this event makes the achievement even more special,” the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Modi praised the athlete’s sporting excellence and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Nishad opened with 6.95 metres, took the lead with 7.09 metres, improved to 7.11 metres, matched it in the fifth attempt and finished with 7.07 metres.

Uzbekistan’s Omadbek Khasanov won silver with a season-best 6.99 metres, while Sri Lanka’s Mohammadu Safran secured bronze with 6.55 metres.

Primarily known for his achievements in the high jump, Nishad began exploring long jump competitions last year. His latest performance demonstrated his ability to excel beyond his specialist discipline.

Nishad won silver in the men’s T47 high jump at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and has claimed world championship gold in the discipline. He is also the defending Asian Para Games champion in high jump, making him one of India’s leading medal prospects.
