Josh Hazlewood claimed six wickets in the second innings as Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test at Kingsmead Stadium on Tuesday. The victory gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

South Africa resumed the final day at 102/4 while chasing 421. Hazlewood’s figures of 6-49 helped Australia dismiss the hosts for 206 in 86.5 overs.

Aiden Markram, unbeaten on 45 overnight, completed his 14th Test half-century and scored 75 from 237 balls. He shared a 69-run partnership with Wiaan Mulder, who made 29, before Hazlewood trapped Mulder leg-before-wicket.

Kyle Verreynne fell for one, while Marco Jansen contributed 35 before Hazlewood bowled him to complete his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Mitchell Starc eventually dismissed Markram in the 86th over. Hazlewood then removed Anrich Nortje to seal Australia’s comprehensive win.

The defeat ended South African captain Temba Bavuma’s unbeaten record as Test skipper. He had won 11 of his previous 12 matches in charge, with the other ending in a draw.

Earlier, Matt Renshaw’s 190 lifted Australia to 390 in their first innings after the visitors slipped to 124/6. Mulder claimed four wickets for South Africa.

Australia then bowled out the hosts for 284 to establish a 106-run lead. Pat Cummins took three wickets, while Hazlewood, Starc and Nathan Lyon claimed two each.

Renshaw scored another 82 in Australia’s second innings as the visitors declared at 314/6. Nic Maddinson added 48, while Cummins struck an unbeaten 32 off 12 balls.

The second Test will begin in Gqeberha on October 18.
