Houthi Attacks Pose Significant Threat to India: South Asia Diary

Iran-backed Houthi rebels’ attack on commercial ships in the Red Sea has sparked fears of destabilizing the region amid the ensuing Israeli war in Gaza. The US has formed a multinational task force, named Operation Prosperity Guardian, to deter the Houthi threat in the middle eastern waterway, which is crucial for international trade. India’s big chunk of crude oil shipping also comes from this area. Major oil companies are now taking longer routes to deliver goods, resulting in a sharp rise in oil prices.
