PM Modi Engages With IOA President On Vinesh Phogat’s Paris Olympics Disqualification

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directly engaged with Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha to gather detailed information on Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50kg women’s wrestling event at the Paris Olympics.

In his conversation with Usha, PM Modi sought clarity on the situation and explored possible avenues for addressing the issue.

He urged the IOA chief to consider all potential options to support Vinesh Phogat and to lodge a formal protest against the disqualification if it could benefit the wrestler.

Earlier, taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing.”

At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you,” PM Modi further added.

Phogat faced a significant setback early Wednesday when she was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit by a few grams.

United World Wrestling regulations state that this disqualification will rank Phogat last in the event.

This is Phogat’s third Olympic appearance.

An injury cost her a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and Vanesa Kaladzinskaya defeated her in the 53kg quarterfinals at the Tokyo Games.

A former World No. 1 in the 48kg category, Phogat’s current disqualification marks a disappointing turn in her Olympic journey.
