Must visit places and how to experience them:
Umiam Lake
This man made marvel is located just outside Shillong. You could start with a night on a houseboat here. This would be the perfect way to relax if you come by road from Guwahati.
Pro tip: A simple wooden boat house is highly recommended to experience tranquillity as your houseboat slowly drifts while it might be drizzling. It not only adds to the romance but is a great way to stay from the crowded tourist spots.
A Trekker’s Delight: The Living Root Bridges of Nongriat
These natural marvels are located in the East Khasi Hills. It is a living testament to the ingenuity of the local Khasi tribes having been crafted from the roots of rubber trees.
To get to Nongriat one can trek down 3,500 steps from Tyrna village.
Doing this during the rains will only add to the high any adventurer seeks.
Pro tip: Pankaj advises to only go down trekking this route if you have been trekking before and are not a beginner or even an amateur. Of Course all safety measures for such treks must be followed.
As far as the view goes this double-decker living root bridge, when misty especially in the monsoon, looks something out of a fairy tale.
The remoteness of Nongriat village offers a charming sense of seclusion and peace. Not to mention the thriving backpacker community will be an added element of joy.
The local homestays are a delightfully simple way to live as the locals do in harmony with nature.
