The American Heart Association introduced Life’s Essential 8 (LE8) in 2022 as a comprehensive update to its earlier Life’s Simple 7 framework.
By adding sleep as a vital factor, LE8 recognises the crucial impact of daily habits on cardiovascular function.
The tool evaluates eight components, divided into health behaviours and health factors, each scored from 0 to 100.
The overall score categorises cardiovascular health as high (80–100), moderate (50–79), or low (<50). It offers a measurable way to predict and prevent heart disease and stroke.
Diet: Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps control weight, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
Physical activity: Regular exercise strengthens the heart, improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, and supports metabolism.
Tobacco exposure: Avoiding smoking and secondhand smoke prevents vascular damage and reduces the risk of stroke.
Sleep: Maintaining 7–9 hours of quality sleep nightly regulates blood pressure, reduces inflammation, and supports overall cardiovascular health.
Body weight: Maintaining a healthy BMI reduces strain on the heart and lowers disease risk.
Blood pressure: Keeping blood pressure within normal limits prevents artery damage.
Blood glucose: Controlling blood sugar helps avoid diabetes-related cardiovascular complications.
Blood lipids: Healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels reduce plaque buildup and support arterial health.
A December 2025 study in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology, using data from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, demonstrated the predictive power of LE8.
Tracking adults aged 45–64 over 27 years, researchers found that even small improvements in LE8 components significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke.
Short-term gains showed that each 1-point increase in LE8 lowered CHD risk by 6.5% and stroke by 5.4%, while long-term gains reduced CHD risk by 4.1% per point.
Benefits were observed across genders and races, slightly stronger in women, with sleep emerging as the most influential factor.
LE8 provides a practical tool for both patients and healthcare professionals. By measuring lifestyle behaviours alongside health metrics, it enables early detection of individuals at risk and guides targeted interventions.
It also allows dynamic monitoring of improvements over time. Its emphasis on diet, exercise, tobacco avoidance, and quality sleep supports immediate and long-term reductions in cardiovascular risk.
By following LE8, individuals can make actionable changes to daily habits, such as adopting a nutrient-rich diet, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, and prioritising adequate sleep.
These lifestyle adjustments, combined with monitoring blood pressure, glucose, and lipids, create a holistic approach to sustaining heart health. They also help reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease.
