No New Notifications, Still Checking? Your Brain May Have Turned It Into A Habit

Unlocking a smartphone, checking the screen and finding no new notifications has become a familiar habit for many people.

Researchers say repeated checking can be driven by learned routines, boredom, curiosity and the expectation of finding something new.

A systematic review of studies using objective smartphone-use data found that frequent, brief interactions can reflect automatic checking patterns.

Internal triggers, such as boredom or curiosity, and external cues can prompt people to reach for their phones without making a conscious decision.

One real-world study found that users initiated 89% of smartphone interactions themselves, rather than responding to notifications.

The finding suggests that established routines can play a bigger role than alerts in prompting people to check their devices.

Notifications can nevertheless strengthen the behaviour.

A 2022 study of 138 iPhone users recorded an average of 49.61 notifications and 56.03 phone pickups each day.

Researchers found links between notification patterns, fear of missing out and checking behaviour, although the study did not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

Another experiment involving 73 Android users tested whether reminders about excessive smartphone use could curb the habit.

After two months, the reminders did not significantly reduce either screen time or checking frequency. These findings suggest that smartphone checking can gradually shift from a conscious choice to an automatic response.

People may unlock their phones while waiting, feeling bored or moving between tasks, even when no notification has appeared.

Recognising these triggers can make users more aware of their digital routines and help them decide when they genuinely want to use their phones.
