Makar Sankranti: Know Significance, Date, Time And How Cities Celebrate Harvest Festival

Makar Sankranti celebration has begun across the country. During the festival the devotees were seen taking a holy dip in the river Ganga while colourful kites hit the markets. Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival observe as the Sun enters the Capricorn or Makara phase, signaling the end of winter. Devotees worship the Sun God on the occasion

Significance

According to the Hindu culture, Makar Sankranti is one significant festival dedicated to Lord Surya or the Sun God. It heralds the end of winter and the start of longer days as the sun moves northward. This period is known as Uttarayan and is considered to be very auspicious.

Date And Time

The harvest festival is celebrated a day after on January 15, Sunday. According to the Drik Panchang, the sanskriti tithi is at 8.57 am. Meanwhile, the Makar Sankranti Punya Kala will run from 7:15 am to 5:46 pm, while the Makar Sankranti Maha Punya Kala will start at 7:15 am and end at 9:00 pm.

Cities Of India Celebrates Makar Sankranti

In Uttar Pradesh, the devotees took a holy dip in the river Ganga in Varanasi on the occasion of the harvest festival; Makar Sankranti.

West Bengal Hindu devotees and Naga Sadhus from different parts of the country gathered at Kolkata’s Babu Ghats. During the Gangasagar Mela, devotees took a holy dip in the river.

Gujarat’s Vadodara markets are seen with full of colourful kites. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photo were featured on the kites. The day is celebrated as ‘Uttarayan’ in Gujarat wherein kite flying and special delicacies such as Undhiyu as well as delightful Gujarati sweets such as Chikkis and Jalebees are a main feature.

All over the country, the harvest festival is celebrated with various names. It is observed as Magh Bihu in Assam, Ghughuti in Uttarakhand, Maghi in Punjab, and Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
