How To Pick The Perfect Watermelon: Easy Tips For Sweet And Juicy Fruit

When selecting a watermelon, start by examining its colour and underside. Look for a uniform green hue and a creamy yellow patch where the fruit rested on the ground.

A pale or white spot may suggest that the watermelon was harvested too early. The rind should feel firm and smooth, free from dents, cuts, or major bruises. A slightly waxy texture is often a sign of ripeness.

Next, check the weight. A ripe watermelon feels heavy for its size, indicating high water content and juiciness. Hold several similar-sized melons to compare.

Typically, the heaviest melon contains the sweetest, most succulent flesh.

Another classic test is to tap the watermelon gently. Listen for a deep, hollow sound that signals ripeness. If the sound is dull or flat, the fruit may be under-ripe or watery, lacking full flavour.

Pay attention to the rind for sugar spots and webbing. Dark, rough lines, called sugar spots, suggest a naturally sweet watermelon.

Webbing, the brown, net-like marks on the surface, often indicates where bees pollinated the flower, which can also correlate with sweetness.

Avoid melons with cracks, soft spots, or signs of damage, as these may indicate over-ripeness or spoilage.

Smaller, round watermelons often have more concentrated sweetness, while larger, oblong varieties are ideal for juicy, refreshing slices.

By combining visual inspection, weight comparison, tapping, and observing sugar spots, shoppers can consistently select the juiciest, sweetest watermelon.

Whether eaten fresh, blended into smoothies, added to salads, or served as juice, a perfectly ripe watermelon brings hydration, flavour, and nutrition, making it a perfect treat for summer.
