Skin care has become an essential part of modern life, with Everyday makeup routines involving foundation, concealer, eye products and lip colours.
Dermatologists, however, caution that excessive or improper use of cosmetic products can gradually damage healthy skin if basic precautions are ignored.
Clogged pores are one of the primary concerns. Heavy foundations and long-wear products often contain silicones, oils and pigments that block pores, leading to acne, blackheads and dull-looking skin.
Wearing makeup for long hours without adequate cleansing prevents the skin from breathing and disrupts its natural renewal process.
Another issue is skin irritation and allergies. Many cosmetic products contain fragrances, preservatives and colourants that can trigger redness, itching or rashes, particularly in people with sensitive skin.
Over time, repeated exposure may weaken the skin barrier, making it more prone to inflammation and infections.
Regular makeup use can also contribute to premature ageing. Some products strip natural moisture from the skin, while inadequate sun protection allows UV damage to accelerate fine lines and pigmentation.
Eye makeup, if not removed gently, may cause thinning of the delicate skin around the eyes.
Dermatologists emphasise that makeup itself is not harmful if used responsibly. The key lies in proper skincare practices.
First, always remove makeup before sleeping. A gentle cleanser or micellar water helps clear pores and remove residue effectively. Skipping this step is one of the biggest contributors to skin damage.
Second, choose non-comedogenic and dermatologist-tested products. These are formulated to reduce pore blockage and irritation. Checking expiry dates and avoiding old or contaminated makeup is equally important.
Third, give your skin regular breaks. Going makeup-free at home allows the skin to recover and maintain its natural balance. Weekly exfoliation and hydration can also help restore skin health.
Finally, sunscreen remains essential. Even makeup with SPF should not replace a dedicated sun protection product, as UV exposure remains a leading cause of skin damage.
Makeup enhances appearance, but careless use can harm skin over time. With mindful habits and the right products, healthy skin and makeup can coexist without compromise.
