Can Your Shoes Cause Leg Pain? Here’s What Your Footwear May Be Doing

Comfortable shoes do not always provide the right support for your feet and legs.

Poorly fitted, overly soft or tight footwear can change the way you walk, placing extra pressure on the feet, ankles, knees and hips.

Shoes with inadequate support can strain muscles and tendons, particularly during prolonged periods of standing or walking.

Worn-out soles can affect your gait by providing uneven support, which may contribute to muscle fatigue and soreness.

High heels can create additional problems by shifting body weight towards the front of the foot. This increases pressure on the forefoot and lower legs and can cause discomfort when worn for extended periods.

Choose shoes that fit properly and provide enough room for your toes.

Look for adequate cushioning and arch support, particularly if you spend long periods standing or walking.

Replace footwear when the soles become uneven or the cushioning starts to deteriorate.

Avoid wearing high heels or unsuitable shoes for long periods, especially during activities that involve extensive walking or standing.

Give your legs adequate rest after prolonged activity. Gentle stretching can also help relieve muscle tension and stiffness.

If a particular pair of shoes causes pain, stop wearing them for some time and check whether your symptoms improve.

Not all leg pain results from footwear. Persistent or severe pain may indicate an underlying health problem and requires proper evaluation.

Seek medical attention if pain appears suddenly, becomes severe or continues to worsen.

Swelling, redness, warmth, numbness, weakness or difficulty moving should also prompt medical evaluation.

Wearing suitable footwear can support comfortable movement and reduce unnecessary strain.

Ongoing leg pain should not be ignored simply because you suspect your shoes are responsible.
