Every month, a different festival takes place that teaches us about India’s traditional history; the next big occasion is Holi and Holi Bhai Dooj.
Holi Bhai Dooj is similar to Diwali Bhai Dooj and Raksha Bandhan in many ways. This is observed on the second day of Holi, also known as Choti Holi or Holika Dahan. It is a significant Hindu festival that honours the love and care that brothers and sisters share.
It is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi of Chaitra, Krishna Paksha, according to the Purnimant Calendar, but on the Dwitiya Tithi of Phalguna Month, Krishna Paksha, according to the Amavasyant Calendar.
Holi Bhai Dooj has been celebrated in India since ancient times, with scholars and mythology telling many stories about when and why Holi Bhai Dooj is celebrated.
Yam and Yami, both Sun children, are the most popular Holi Bhai Dooj stories. Yam once decided to surprise his sister Yami on Dwitiya Tithi. Yami prepared the food and afterward applied a tilak to Yam’s forehead. Then Yam requested a boom for her, and Yami requested that every year on this day when the brothers will visit their sister’s house and will have lunch with them, they will live a long fortunate life.
Another story involves Shri Krishna meeting his sister Subhadra after defecating a demon named Narakasura. Several stories have been told about this festival.
Bhai Dooj symbolizes the brother-sister bond of love and care; the sister performs aarti and tilak for her brother’s long life and wealth, and the brother makes promises with gifts.
