Always Tired Even After Sleep? Social Jetlag Could Be The Reason

Many people experience an odd paradox: exhaustion builds through the workweek, yet even after a long weekend sleep, they still wake up feeling drained.

Health experts say the reason may not be lack of sleep, but social jetlag, a growing lifestyle-related sleep disorder.

Social jetlag occurs when a person’s biological clock (circadian rhythm) clashes with their social schedule, such as fixed school or office timings.

While the body may naturally prefer sleeping at midnight and waking later, work or academic demands often force people to rise early.

This repeated mismatch confuses the internal clock, creating symptoms similar to travelling across time zones, without ever leaving home.

During weekends, many people try to ‘catch up’ on lost sleep by waking several hours later than usual. While this feels restorative in the short term, experts warn it actually deepens the disruption.

Each Monday, the body shifts back into an early routine, effectively experiencing a mini jetlag every week. Over time, this constant resetting strains both physical and mental health.

Medical studies have linked chronic social jetlag to more than just tiredness. It can:

  • Reduce concentration and work performance,
  • Increase the risk of weight gain and metabolic disorders, and
  • Raise the likelihood of cardiovascular problems

Mental health remains affected. Irregular sleep timing has been associated with higher rates of anxiety, low mood and depression, particularly among teenagers and young adults, whose biological clocks naturally run later.

Students, shift workers, early-morning office employees and adolescents are especially vulnerable. Teenagers, in particular, face a double burden: biological changes that delay sleep onset, combined with early school start times.

Experts say the solution lies in consistency, not compensation. They say people can sleep one to two hours longer on weekends, but should avoid drastic shifts in their sleep schedule.

Maintaining similar sleep and wake times throughout the week helps stabilise the body clock.

Flexible work schedules, later school start times and awareness around sleep timing can significantly reduce the impact.

If rest doesn’t refresh you, the issue may not be sleep duration, but sleep timing. Ignoring social jetlag can quietly drain energy, focus and long-term health.

Keeping your sleep schedule aligned could be the simplest way to reclaim your vitality, before social jetlag steals it away.
