UP Government Counsels Welcome Fee Hike Approved By Yogi Cabinet

Government counsels across Uttar Pradesh have welcomed the state government’s decision to revise the retainership and appearance fees of advocates representing the government before various courts.

The Advocate General and his legal team described the move as a historic decision and thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for addressing a long-standing concern of the legal fraternity.

According to the counsels, the Chief Minister recognised the need for effective representation of the state’s interests before the judiciary and initiated measures to strengthen the legal system.

The State Cabinet subsequently approved a significant enhancement in fees, fulfilling a demand that had remained pending for several years.

The legal community stated that the revision goes beyond a financial increase and represents an important step towards making the judicial system more efficient, responsive, and result-oriented. They noted that stronger legal support would help ensure the timely and effective handling of litigation involving the state government.

The benefits of the decision will extend to government advocates serving at district courts, the Allahabad High Court, the Lucknow Bench, and the Supreme Court.

Various categories of counsels, including District Government Counsels, Standing Counsels, Government Advocates, Brief Holders, and Advocates-on-Record, are expected to benefit from the revised structure.

Revision After Years of Pending Demands

Advocates highlighted that the revision comes after nearly a decade for district court counsels and around fourteen years for those associated with the Advocate General’s office.

With increasing litigation, complex legal matters, and expanding professional responsibilities, they said a review of remuneration had become necessary.

The revised framework provides for an increase of up to 50 per cent in retainership and per-hearing fees.

According to the counsels, the move will boost morale, strengthen professional commitment, and improve the quality of legal representation in matters concerning the state.

Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the advocates said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to recognising the contribution of the legal fraternity. They added that the move would strengthen the judicial system, safeguard state interests, and support the effective administration of justice.
