The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday detained retired district judge Giribala Singh from her residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area in connection with the alleged dowry death case of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma.
Officials deployed a heavy police presence in the area and restricted public movement during the operation.
The development followed a significant order by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which cancelled the anticipatory bail earlier granted to Giribala Singh.
The High Court observed that the trial court failed to examine crucial facts before granting relief.
Twisha Sharma died at her matrimonial residence on May 12, merely five months after marrying Samarth Singh on December 9, 2025.
Giribala Singh had approached a Bhopal sessions court seeking pre-arrest bail shortly after the incident.
The 10th Additional Sessions Judge granted bail on May 15, considering her age and financial transfers made to the deceased.
In a detailed 17-page order, vacation judge Devnarayan Mishra ruled that WhatsApp conversations and statements from Twisha’s family suggested allegations extended beyond her husband, Samarth Singh.
The court directed deeper scrutiny under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Twisha’s family accused Giribala Singh and her son of harassment and alleged that they pressured Twisha to terminate her pregnancy.
The court acknowledged that the pregnancy termination was an admitted fact.
While the post-mortem report cited antemortem hanging as the cause of death, the High Court noted six to seven additional injuries on Twisha’s body.
A subsequent medical query clarified that those injuries did not occur during transportation or removal from the ligature.
Advocate General Prashant Singh stated that investigators repeatedly issued notices, but Giribala Singh allegedly failed to cooperate adequately with the probe.
