TVK Moves Supreme Court Over Tamil Nadu Government Formation Deadlock

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has approached the Supreme Court of India amid continuing uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu after the 2026 Assembly election results.

The writ petition, filed on Friday by petitioner Ezhilarasi K, challenged Governor RV Arlekar over alleged inaction regarding TVK’s claim to form the next government.

The matter has been registered as Diary Number 28509/2026 and currently remains pending before the apex court.

The political deadlock intensified after TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly with 108 seats, remaining short of the majority mark of 118.

The party, however, strengthened its position after securing support from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India-Marxist.

The Left parties announced their support during a joint press conference in Chennai.

CPI state secretary M Veerapandian and CPI-M state secretary P Shanmugam clarified that both parties would extend outside support instead of joining a potential TVK-led Cabinet.

Congress’s support earlier increased TVK’s tally to 112 MLAs, while backing from CPI and CPI-M raised the number to 116.

The Governor’s office reportedly informed the C Joseph Vijay-led party that it must submit a list of 118 supporting legislators before further constitutional proceedings begin.

Vijay subsequently met the Governor twice, including a 40-minute meeting on Wednesday, to press the party’s claim.

Officials, however, maintained that TVK still lacked the required numerical strength. The party now requires support from at least two additional MLAs.

Political observers believe parties such as the VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League could become decisive in determining the next government in Tamil Nadu.
