The Supreme Court on Monday urged restraint in media coverage of the suspected dowry death case involving model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma and emphasised that the investigation must proceed in a fair, independent and unbiased manner.
The apex court also requested both the victim’s family and the accused to avoid making public statements that could influence the ongoing probe.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, made the observations while hearing a suo motu case linked to allegations of institutional bias and procedural irregularities in the investigation.
The court said it was concerned about certain developments emerging through extensive media reporting and public commentary surrounding the matter.
The Bench requested media organisations not to record or broadcast statements from either side, stating that such coverage could affect issues that are still under investigation.
The court stressed that all parties should allow the legal process to continue without interference or speculation.
The Supreme Court initiated suo motu proceedings over concerns of possible institutional bias in the Twisha Sharma death case.
The court expressed confidence in the CBI probe after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta confirmed that the agency would take over the investigation immediately.
The Bench urged both families to cooperate with investigators and avoid public statements.
Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12.
The incident triggered widespread outrage and allegations of dowry harassment from her family, leading the apex court to take suo motu cognisance amid concerns over alleged procedural lapses and delays in the initial investigation.
