The Supreme Court will hear on November 25 a plea seeking the removal of a video posted by the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the social media platform ‘X’. The video allegedly portrays a communal narrative and has sparked significant controversy across the state.
Earlier, the court had issued notices to the Assam government, the BJP’s Assam unit, and the social media platform ‘X’. A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta is hearing the case.
Journalist Qurban Ali filed the petition, alleging that the video claims Muslims would ‘take over’ the state if a particular political party fails to come to power.
During a previous hearing, senior advocate Nizam Pasha, representing the petitioner, argued that the video shows visuals suggesting certain communities have ‘occupied’ areas, using imagery of men with beards and caps to reinforce stereotypes.
Pasha urged the court to take action against the creators of the video and demanded the registration of an FIR. He further requested that if no FIR is filed, contempt proceedings should be initiated against the authorities for inaction.
The plea states that the BJP Assam unit’s official ‘X’ handle, @BJP4Assam, posted the video on September 15, 2025, presenting a ‘highly misleading narrative’ that undermines the nation’s secular fabric.
The petition claims that the video violates the constitutional obligation of maintaining communal harmony and misrepresents the demographic and political landscape of Assam.
Following the video’s circulation, several Muslim organisations and civil society groups lodged objections, accusing the state government of promoting communal polarisation for electoral gains. Critics argued that the attempt aimed to damage the image of the Muslim community and divert attention from developmental issues.
The Supreme Court will review the petition’s demand for the video’s removal and the initiation of criminal proceedings when the matter comes up for hearing on November 25.
