Supreme Court Petition Seeks Protection For Sonam Wangchuk, Jantar Mantar Protesters

A letter petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking protection of the fundamental rights of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and other peaceful protesters demonstrating at Jantar Mantar.

The petition requests urgent intervention to safeguard their rights under Articles 14, 19, 21 and 32 of the Constitution while ensuring access to essential medical care during the ongoing protest.

The petition states that the protest centres on issues of national importance, including the alleged NEET paper leak, examination irregularities, transparency in recruitment and entrance examinations, and fairness in public assessment systems. It argues that these concerns directly affect the future of millions of students and require immediate attention from constitutional authorities.

The petitioner further alleges that Sonam Wangchuk’s detention by the police left the movement without its principal leader, creating concern among protesters about the continuation of their peaceful demonstration.

The plea contends that any arbitrary or disproportionate police action would violate the constitutional rights of peaceful demonstrators.

The petition has urged the Supreme Court to direct the authorities to allow the peaceful protest and hunger strike at Jantar Mantar to continue without unnecessary police interference. It also seeks directions restraining law enforcement agencies from using excessive force except in accordance with the law.

In addition, the petitioner has requested the court to direct the authorities to provide adequate medical facilities at the protest site, including qualified doctors, emergency medical equipment, medicines and regular health examinations for Sonam Wangchuk and other participants observing the hunger strike.

The plea also seeks appropriate directions to protect the life, health and constitutional rights of all peaceful protesters.
