Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Moves Delhi High Court Over Hospitalisation

Dr Geetanjali J Angmo, wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Delhi High Court. She has alleged that her husband is being unlawfully kept at Safdarjung Hospital. She has requested the court to order his immediate discharge and allow his transfer to a private hospital chosen by the family.

The petition also seeks permission for family members and lawyers to meet him.

According to the petition, Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since 28 June 2026 in support of students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination.

On 16 July, the Delhi High Court directed government doctors to monitor his health daily.

Two days later, police shifted him from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital. His wife claims his condition was stable and there was no medical justification for the transfer.

The petition alleges that the hospital has not shared Wangchuk’s complete medical records with the family.

Dr Angmo stated that his potassium level was 4.3 on 17 July, while the hospital reported it as 2.9 the following day.

An independent laboratory later recorded a potassium level of 3.6, leading the family to question the hospital’s findings.

Dr Angmo further alleged that the hospital administration rejected her repeated requests to shift Wangchuk to a private hospital. She also claimed that the authorities have denied Wangchuk access to his lawyers and the doctors who treated him over the past 20 days.

The petition argues that the authorities are keeping him in the hospital without any requirement under the Delhi High Court’s earlier order and asks the court to declare his continued hospitalisation unconstitutional. It also seeks complete medical records, treatment only with his consent, and his transfer to the family’s preferred hospital.

Separately, Supreme Court advocate Narendra Mishra has submitted a letter petition to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The petition seeks protection of the fundamental rights of Sonam Wangchuk and other protesters observing a hunger strike.

The petition seeks adequate medical care for the protesters. It also urges the court to prevent unnecessary interference with their peaceful demonstration.
