SC Delays Hearing On Mob-Lynching; Cites time constraints

The apex court has refused an immediate hearing on a petition by the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) regarding mob lynching citing a lack of time. The lawyer appearing on behalf of the petitioner informed that the petition was listed for the hearing, however, the court could not proceed with the schedule due to the lack of time

A bench presided by Justice BR Gavai, issuing a tentative date of February, said that the court already had enough cases listed for January.

In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had expressed serious concern over rising cases of mob lynching, and mob violence, especially those perpetrated by cow vigilants. Issuing a sterned warning to five Indian states- Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Telangana- the apex court had asked them to file a reply affidavit in the previous hearing.

Emphasising repercussion, the court had said if the said states fails to comply, the chief secretary of consorned state would need to appear in the court to explain why step was not taken.

National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), filling a petition against mob lynching, urged supreme court to direct state governments to take swift action in line with the guideline issued by apex court in 2018. SC had issued a guiline in 2018 to curb the incidents of mob violence, particularly those targeted muslims and perperated by cow vigilants

The petition highlights the failure of state governments to effectively implement these directives, accusing them of negligence in addressing the ongoing threat of mob violence. As the matter moves forward, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court’s response when it reconvenes in February.
