SC Defers Hearing On Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah Case To April

On Friday, the Supreme Court refrained from interfering with the Allahabad High Court’s decision to consolidate all suits and applications related to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute for a combined hearing.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar made an observation. They noted that combining all related suits and applications for a joint hearing would benefit both parties. This approach, they said, would help avoid multiple proceedings

The bench, however, stopped short of issuing any orders, choosing to adjourn the case for further hearing in April.

Addressing the counsel for the Committee of Management Trust Shahi Idgah, CJI Khanna stated, “Why should we interfere in the issue of consolidation? What difference does it make if it is consolidated? It is to your benefit and their benefit also that multiple proceedings are avoided. We will adjourn this. I do not know why everything needs to be contested. Re-list in the first week of April 2025.”

The Supreme Court is hearing multiple petitions concerning the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah mosque dispute.

The case revolves around the Shahi Eidgah mosque in Mathura. It is claimed that the mosque was constructed after demolishing a temple at Lord Krishna’s birthplace.

A civil suit, filed on behalf of the Hindu deity Bhagwan Shri Krishna Virajman and some devotees however alleges the mosque stands on Krishna Janmabhoomi land and seeks its relocation.
