Rajpal Yadav Repays Rs 2.5 Crore In Cheque Dishonour Case; Seeks More Time

Actor Rajpal Yadav has repaid half the outstanding amount in the cheque dishonour matter against him, his counsel Bhaskar Upadhyay stated.

The legal team informed the court that they have remitted Rs 2.5 crore out of the total Rs 5 crore.

Upadhyay sought an adjournment during Thursday’s hearing. He explained that the bail application requires a response from the opposing party.

Additionally, he added that Yadav’s manager will meet the actor in custody to obtain instructions regarding the remaining payment and legal position.

The lawyer indicated that further clarity will likely emerge on Monday. He asserted that the investment amount was never disputed. He also claimed that during earlier discussions, the company had declined to accept payment.

Bhaskar Upadhyay confirmed that negotiations continue over a 2012 agreement, under which three months have already elapsed.

Upadhyay declined to comment on the source of funds, describing it as a private family matter. He stated that he will personally visit the jail to brief Yadav on compliance requirements.

He reiterated that Rs 2.5 crore has already been paid and said the court will determine the next course of action.

The case stems from multiple cheque bounce complaints. Yadav surrendered after the Delhi High Court directed him to do so.

The dispute relates to a loan he secured in 2010 to finance his film Ata Pata Laapata. He failed to repay the borrowed amount.

In 2018, a magistrate’s court sentenced Yadav and his wife to six months’ imprisonment.

A sessions court upheld the conviction in 2019. In 2024, the couple approached the Delhi High Court seeking relief.

The court temporarily suspended the sentence, noting that they were not repeat offenders and granting time for settlement.

However, Yadav did not fulfil the repayment commitments. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma criticised his conduct, observing repeated failures to honour undertakings despite multiple opportunities granted by the court.
