Omar Abdullah’s Alimony Payment Delayed, Next Hearing In Divorce Case Set For Four Weeks

During a recent hearing on the divorce petition filed by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah, Omar’s lawyer explained that the delay in alimony payment was due to his involvement in elections. Payal Abdullah is set to receive a cheque of Rs 15,75,000 tomorrow. The next hearing for the case will take place in four weeks.

Omar Abdullah filed for divorce in the Supreme Court, citing cruelty as the grounds. Both parties have been living separately since 2009. In the last hearing, Omar’s lawyer said they had lived apart for 15 years. The Delhi High Court increased Payal’s alimony, ordering Omar to pay Rs 1.5 lakh monthly to Payal and Rs 60,000 for their sons. Previously, a lower court ruling from 2018 set Omar’s monthly payments at Rs 75,000 for Payal and Rs 25,000 for each child.

Legal History And Mediation Dispute

In the last hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Omar, argued that sending the case to mediation was unhelpful. Payal Abdullah’s lawyer supported the suggestion. Omar challenged the Delhi High Court’s decision to send the case for mediation, stating that his marriage had ended irreparably. Their marriage, which began in 1994, had suffered due to irreconcilable differences.
