On Thursday, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice K Vinod Chandran as a Supreme Court judge.
Earlier on Monday, the Centre approved Justice Chandran’s appointment to the Supreme Court, following the recommendation of the Collegium.
Taking to X, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal posted, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice, Patna High Court as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.”
Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed elevating Patna High Court Chief Justice Chandran as a judge of the Supreme Court.
A statement released by SC Collegium stated, “While recommending his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that there is no representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court from the High Court of Kerala.”
Justice Chandran became a judge of the Kerala High Court in November 2011 and promoted to Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on 29 March 2023.
“He has served as a Judge of the High Court for more than 11 years and as a Chief Justice of a big High Court for more than a year. During his long tenure as a Judge and Chief Justice of the High Court, Mr Justice Chandran has acquired significant experience in diverse fields of law,” the SC Collegium asserted.
The apex court Collegium reviewed and discussed the names of Chief Justices and senior High Court judges eligible for Supreme Court appointments during its meeting.
Born on 25 April 1963, Justice Chandran holds a law degree from Kerala Law Academy Law College in Thiruvananthapuram and began practicing in 1991.
Before becoming a judge, he served as Special Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Kerala government from 2007 to 2011.
With this appointment, Justice Chandran becomes the 13th in seniority among High Court judges across India.
